why bamboo star?

the term"bamboo star" is the literal translation of "juk sing" in cantonese, an old slang that refered to being "caught between the notches of a bamboo stick." it is used to describe our american-born chinese generation, by the traditional chinese community.

forever caught in the middle...

we will never be fully american due to our looks, but never truly chinese because of our american attitudes. in more contemporary terms, you could say we're "bananas" or "twinkies.

but call it what you will. it is who we are.

and rather than hiding from this identity, we wear it with pride, fully embracing it and making it our own.
